Winnikenni Castle

Winnikenni Park Conservation Area contains more than 700 acres of nature’s beauty. There are four designated trails where visitors can walk, hike, jog, bike, and cross country ski in the winter. The trails consist of The Castle Trail, The Dudley Porter Trail, Shore Trail, and lastly the Plug Pond trail.

Winnikenni Castle and the surrounding grounds are often venues for a variety of family fun events including the Halloween “Winnikenni Castle of Fear,” a Spring Easter Egg hunt, free concerts, poetry readings, and food expos.

The idea of a castle in New England was brought upon by a dream of a famous Chemist and Agriculturalist Dr. James R. Nichols. In 1871, Dr. Nichols purchased a plot of land over seeing the beautiful, picturesque Kenoza Lake. After a visit to the United Kingdom in 1872, Dr. Nichols was inspired by the strong standing, gothic style stone castles of medieval Europe. Construction began in 1873 and the final touches were completed in 1875. In 1895 Winnikenni Castle, named after the Algonquian word for “Very Beautiful,” was purchased by the city of Haverhill. Winnikenni Park Conservation became Haverhill’s first public park.
